CanWest Interactive Turns to MyComputer.com

CanWest chooses SuperStats Enterprise 7.0 to track and analyze the behavior of over two million unique visitors, generating 103 million page views each month, across canada.com the No.1 Canadian News and Information website.

Orem, UT (January 22, 2001) - Keeping track of two million of anything is not an easy task. Just ask CanWest Interactive.

As a division of CanWest Global Communications Corporation, CanWest Interactive operates the canada.com network, Canada's number one Canadian online destination for local news and information. canada.com is the online home of properties including Global Television, National Post, over thirty Southam daily newspapers, Faceoff.com, carclick.com, careerclick.com and homesclick.com.

The Challenge:
In the early years of the World Wide Web when businesses and companies were just beginning to grasp the idea of creating Web sites, most early adopters created simple Web sites that consisted of a few sections and pages. These early sites were simple to manage, and early Internet tools made it possible for an individual to easily track the number of people that entered a site and know what pages were of most interest to those visitors.

As the Web has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon and the Internet has become an essential part of daily life, businesses now have the ability to create Web sites that are more and more robust, and in fact, can become a network of interlinked sites and communications channels. This means that a user can visit multiple sites, channels and pages during the same "visit" to one Web site.

Although such interconnectedness affords many benefits to both user and organization, it also has created a whole new raft of challenges for those responsible for managing these Web properties. Some of the questions such Web managers need to answer include

  • Who is visiting my site (or networks of sites)?
  • What pages or page sections are being viewed the most?
  • How many people return to my site(s)? and how often?
  • How long does it take visitors to find what they want?
  • Where are visitors going within the site (or network)?
  • Are people doing what we intended them to do?
  • The Solution:
Recognizing the need to get a better handle on the statistics within its network of Web sites and answer their questions about visitor interactions, CanWest Interactive turned to SuperStats Enterprise 7.0.

Developed by MyComputer.com, SuperStats Enterprise 7.0 uniquely addresses customer's complex and distinct Web analytic needs. Designed to actually empower e-business decision-making, SuperStats pushes Web analytics into the next generation with numerous real-time site statistics and customizable reporting capabilities. Web managers can quickly get comprehensive measurements and analyses and do such things as

  • track channels or content groups,
  • consolidate a network's site statistics into one (or several regional) master accounts,
  • provide historical and current data reports,
  • create a more holistic view of Web visitors, and
  • gauge the success of e-business initiatives across a single Web site or across a network of Web properties.
  • "The size of our network required a robust analysis tool that could provide us with real-time reports and statistics across all of our Web sites," said Andrew Consky, research manager for CanWest Interactive. "MyComputer.com's SuperStats Enterprise has a proven track record of being able to manage some of the largest networks of companies conducting business on the Web, and we were confident it could provide us with the same level of service and do so quickly."

    The Results:
In less than five days after signing up with MyComputer.com, CanWest was able to use SuperStats Enterprise to implement nine accounts across the canada.com network, including all customization and training requirements for CanWest Interactive managers.

SuperStats has also enabled CanWest to track all visitors to its Web sites, provide up-to-date reports for its sales teams, and help break down important information for the network's advertisers that are interested in knowing how much traffic is getting to the Web site tied to a particular geographic region and which advertisements are working the best.

"We have been extremely pleased with the analysis provided by SuperStats," Consky said. "We have been able to mine new and vital information about our network, including what channels are the most popular for our visitors, and what portions of our site need extra attention. Based on these initial results, we will be able to better understand our users and more accurately (and successfully) sell space to our advertisers."

    How It Works:
SuperStats Enterprise offers companies such as CanWest the unique ability to combine traffic statistics from several sites into one report that gives an overview of how sites are performing and contributing to the whole network.

For instance, SuperStats' Multi-Site Roll-upsTM feature enables canada.com to know which cities on its Web site were receiving the most views and if their visitors were choosing to view the city papers that were listed on the site. After SuperStats combined this data into one report, CanWest was able to assess the statistics and better position their Web site for advertisers.

Other SuperStats Enterprise features include report bookmarks, schedulable reports, multiple URL tracking, a user login and permission system, deep data drill down, enhanced visitor metrics, report accelerator, new login portal, enhanced accuracy, and a related metrics section, among others.

"SuperStats takes Web site analytics to the next level by providing a solution that is flexible enough to work with one site or a complete network of sites," said Josh James, chief executive officer of MyComputer.com. "SuperStats provides the most basic of statistics, such as the number of page views, as well as delivers very robust reports which reveal audience profiles and interests and compare sites to sites, or pages to pages. We make it easy for site owners to see the return on their investments through real, accurate numbers."

    Conclusion:
The growth of the Web has forced many companies to go beyond the simple Web counters or server log files of the earliest days of the World Wide Web to track and analyze site traffic and data. Today's Web requires a flexible and powerful analytics tool that has robust features and the ability to provide real-time data and analysis that will trigger change and improvements.

And according to CanWest Interactive, SuperStats Enterprise is that solution.
